Science Talk

On Wednesday 6th of May Dr Sorcha Ni Longphuirt from the Environmental Protection Agency gave a talk to 5th and 6th class about her job.  Dr Ni Longphuirt is a Marine Biologist who works on water quality in the inter-tidal area of Ireland’s estuaries.  She is responsible for testing the water quality in a number of estuaries stretching from the Dingle peninsula to Dungarvan Bay.  She has a specific academic interest in micro plankton and has written a number of academic papers on the topic.  Dr Ni Longphuirt discussed this work and the pathways available to the pupils to become a scientist.

During the talk the class were introduced to the biodiversity of marine life in Irish waters with a specific focus on the interconnectivity of species and their dependence on a pristine environment.  The talk then proceeded to link this interconnectivity to the idea of a food web.  The class were given practical tasks to complete on the topic and were encouraged to discuss and hypothesise on the complexity and dynamism of this web.
